How to Get a Motorcycle License in South Africa

Application Process

Getting a motorcycle license in South Africa involves following a few steps. The first step is to obtain a learner's license. To do this, you need to complete the Application for Learner's License form LL1, which is available at the Driver's License Testing Centre (DLTC). If you are 65 years or older, you must also complete a medical examination.

Learner's License

To obtain a learner's license to ride a motorcycle, you must be at least 16 years old. Once you have completed the application form and, if necessary, the medical examination, you will need to pass a learner's license test. This test consists of a written exam and a practical test.

Yard Test

The practical test for a motorcycle learner's license is known as the Yard Test. This test is conducted in a yard at the DLTC and assesses your ability to control a motorcycle at low speeds. You will need to perform a series of maneuvers, such as starting, stopping, and turning.

Full License

Once you have obtained your learner's license, you can practice riding a motorcycle for a period of one year. After this period, you will need to pass a full license test. This test consists of a written exam, a practical test, and a road test.

In order to get fully licensed to ride a bike on South African roads, you can expect to pay about R2000 in total. This value can vary depending on factors such as the cost of the learner's license, the cost of the practical tests, and any additional costs such as the cost of a motorcycle safety course.
