Finland Wins 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Overtime Thriller

Sakari Manninen's Overtime Goal Gives Finland the Victory

WEB TAMPERE, FINLAND - Sakari Manninen became a national hero on Sunday night, scoring the overtime goal that gave Finland a 4-3 victory over Canada in the final of the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. The overtime win marked Finland's fourth IIHF World Championship title.

A Thrilling Contest from Start to Finish

The game was a back-and-forth affair from the opening puck drop, with both teams trading chances and goals. Dylan Cozens, Zach Whitecloud, and Max Comtois scored for Canada, while Matt Barzal added an assist. For Finland, Manninen's overtime winner was his second goal of the game, with Ville Pokka and Mikael Granlund also chipping in with goals.

The victory was a special moment for Finland, which was hosting the tournament for the first time since 2013. The Finns had a strong showing throughout the tournament, going 8-1-0 in the preliminary round and then defeating Slovakia, Germany, and the United States in the knockout round.

Canada, which was seeking its 30th IIHF World Championship title, had a disappointing tournament, finishing with a 5-4-0 record. The Canadians were defeated by the United States in the semifinals and then by Finland in the final.

Despite the loss, Canada can be proud of its performance in the tournament. The team showed a lot of resilience, coming back from behind to win several games. The Canadians also had several young players who stepped up and made an impact.
